Apologies…

I certainly appreciate all the followers of the blog, but I have to apologize for the lack of updates in the last week or so. I have a lot to post including alumni interviews and some other notes regarding the Cents and fully intend on posting them soon. There’s lots going on right now with work and home life that unfortunately are taking priority over the blog right now. It’s nothing serious and no reason for concern, but simply things are keeping me really busy right now.

Thanks again and sorry for the lack of updates.

Interior Conference Playoff Picture:

It was good news/bad news scenario for the Merritt Centennials on the scoreboard tonight.

The good news is that Trail lost in regulation 3-2 to Surrey to keep the Smoke Eaters tied with the Cents at 46 points.

The bad news is that Quesnel beat Burnaby 4-1 to move two points ahead of both Trail and Merritt with a road game in Williams Lake left on the schedule for the Mills.

So basically it breaks down like this, in order for Merritt to finish fifth in the Interior Conference, in addition to beating the Smoke Eaters tomorrow night, they also need Williams Lake to beat Quesnel.

The Timberwolves may just relish the role of playing spoiler and come out with an inspired effort in their final home game of the season, much the same way they scored three third period goals tonight to rally to beat Prince George 4-3 to snap a 24 game losing streak – at least that’s what Cents fans are hoping for.

Interior Conference Playoff Picture, Q101 Radio Night, Murray GM Shoot to Win, Mitch Jones Leaves Cents:

Well, the final weekend of the BCHL’s regular season is upon us and the Cents are only involved in one game on the schedule, tomorrow night at home against Trail. Merritt is tied with the Smoke Eaters and Quesnel at 46 points following the Centennials 6-4 win over Salmon Arm on Wednesday. Fifth place in the Interior Conference is definitely within the Cents reach, but they’ll need some help from other teams. They hold the tie-break over both the Mills and Smokies but need to get to that point first.

Regardless of whether Trail beats Surrey tonight, the Cents have to beat the Smoke Eaters themselves tomorrow night if they want to climb into fifth place. A Merritt win combined with two Trail losses in the last three games would give the Cents the edge over the Smoke Eaters. The Cents also need to combine a win over Trail with a single loss in regulation by Quesnel against Burnaby or Williams Lake to claim fifth. Any combination of the Millionaires or Smoke Eaters receiving three points or more and it won’t matter if the Cents beat Trail, they won’t catch fifth place.

Clear as mud right!?

Tomorrow’s game against the Smoke Eaters is big in more ways than one as it’s also Q101 Radio Night and we’ll be there giving away more than $500 in prizes from our awesome sponsors – City Furniture, Crystal Gardens Chinese Restaurant, Work N’ Play Clothing Company, Coldwater Hotel, Spaner & Webb Clothing Company and more!

We’ll give all fans who bring a radio to the game a ticket and if they hear us draw their number during the broadcast, they’ll win a prize — which means I’ll be doing colour commentary with Alex Grebenyuk for only the second time this season! Plus, we’ll also be throwing prizes and gift certificates into the crowd during the first intermission!

Murray GM, Boston Pizza, Tim Hortons and Second Avenue Signs in Merritt have also all teamed up to present one of the most exciting contests for a Cents game in a long time. During the second intermission tomorrow, people who have qualified for the Shoot To Win all season will have a chance to win a brand new Camaro, it’s a beauty and it’s valued at more than $30,000!

Plus, four lucky 50/50 ticket buyers will have their names drawn for a chance to shoot to win $10,000 EACH! Each contestant will line up at the centre ice red line and have 20 seconds to shoot 16 pucks into the net. Those who are successful will win $10,000! It’s gonna be awesome!

(Cents defenceman Mitch Jones)

There have been rumours going around regarding Cents defenceman Mitch Jones and his status with the club. All coach and GM Luke Pierce would tell me is that Mitch has left the team and been suspended by the club for the remainder of the season and playoffs. I have no idea other than that, but am willing to bet there will be all sorts of speculation.

Regardless of reasons, I hope that the Cents are able to put any sort of distraction behind them and focus on the task at hand, grabbing fifth place!

Cents Clinch Playoff Spot!

The Merritt Centennials will take part in the BCHL’s post-season dance for the first time since the roster was dotted with names like Pierro-Zabotel, MacLeod, Butcher and Stermer.

The Cents clinched one of the seven Interior Conference playoff spots after Prince George lost 7-0 to Penticton tonight. With just three games left, the Spruce Kings have 37 points, meaning that even if they won all three of their remaining games and Merritt lost both of its remaining games, PG still wouldn’t be able to catch the Cents. The Sprucies loss also clinches a spot for Trail. Quesnel grabbed a playoff spot when Prince George lost on Saturday night.

Now Merritt, Quesnel and Trail will duke it out for the fifth, sixth and seventh positions to determine who will match-up in the first round. There’s just one point two points separating the fifth place Millionaires and the seventh place Centennials. Both the Mills and Cents have two games left, while the Smoke Eaters have two games in hand on both.

I know fans in Merritt are very excited about the prospect of the Cents being in the playoffs, but the players aren’t satisfied with just making it, and are determined to finish as high in the standings as possible. The bottom line is, considering the turmoil this franchise has gone through in the last three seasons, the Centennials Board of Directors, coaches Luke Pierce and Maury Grant, and all the players deserve a huge pat on the back and congratulations for the accomplishment. Here’s hoping that the final two home games of the regular season see a packed house at Memorial Arena to show the Cents’ players how much the fans appreciate their efforts and send them into the playoffs on a huge wave of momentum.

Here’s the update of the Interior Conference playoff picture after today’s games, with Prince George no longer included.

Victoria 2 Quesnel 0
Penticton 7 Prince George 0

The playoff picture is becoming somewhat clearer in the Interior Conference. A Prince George loss to Penticton this afternoon would eliminate the Spruce Kings from the post-season and clinch a spot for both Merritt and Trail. Quesnel clinched when PG lost to Vernon last night.
