F Milan Gajic (Merritt/Burnaby, 1997-01) has signed a one-year contract with Victoria Salmon Kings (ECHL) for the 2010-11 season. Gajic, who’s from Burnaby, split last season between Florida Everblades (ECHL) and Albany River Rats (AHL). In 33 games with the Everblades, he registered 15 goals and 27 assists and recorded one goal in six games with Albany. . . .
D Dave Simoes (Merritt/Prince George/Williams Lake/Burnaby, 2001-06) has been traded from Mississippi River Kings (CHL) to Allen Americans (CHL) for fellow D Tyler Wooddisse. Simoes had two goals, 13 assists and 171 penalty minutes in 58 games with Mississippi last season. The Vanderhoof product is entering his fourth Central League season. . . .
Former Cents coach Kevin MacKay won’t be back in the BCHL this season after all. Here’s the story from the Salmon Arm Observer:
’Backs lose assistant coach
Updated: July 28, 2010 5:12 PM
The merry-go-round continues behind the Salmon Arm SilverBacks bench.
Kevin MacKay, announced by the club in May as the team’s new assistant, has opted not to report to Salmon Arm.
MacKay had a working relationship with former ‘Backs coach Rylan Ferster, who stepped down in June. When the Ferster resignation announcement was made, MacKay’s ties to Salmon Arm were severed.
“He had had discussions with Rylan and had Rylan stayed, he would have come onboard,” said new SilverBacks bench boss Tim Kehler, who was hired in late June.
Kehler said MacKay, who spent the past several seasons as head coach and general manager of the Kimberley Dynamiters of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, was up front about pursuing other options when the two met about two weeks ago.
“He’s secured other employment,” said Kehler, though he did not know where MacKay was headed and noted MacKay never even set up in a coaching capacity with the SilverBacks and was not on the payroll.
That leaves Kehler in charge of finding a new assistant. He said Monday an announcement will be made in August regarding the position.
In the meantime, Kehler is headed to Prince Albert, Sask. to finalize the inking of three players who were recruited in May.
Bryce Gervais, Taylor Fauchoux and Cody Michelle all spent last season with the Prince Albert Mintos and will report to training camp at the end of August.
