I almost missed this deal when it came down late last week, but the Coquitlam Express made another change to their blueline, this time via subtraction without adding another piece.
The Express sent 18-year-old Brett Seldon to the Cowichan Valley Capitals in exchange for future considerations. Although the deal goes down as for “futures”, the Caps release indicates that Seldon was acquired on waivers.
As I blogged earlier this season when Tanner Cochrane went from Powell River to Chilliwack, the same situation is in play with Seldon.
Basically, the Express had a deal in place to send Seldon to a team outside of the BCHL in exchange for cash. In any deal where a player is being traded out of province for cash, the player must be placed on BCHL waivers for 24 hours before the deal is approved. The Capitals put in a claim for Seldon and as a result the trade Coquitlam made with the team outside of the BCHL was voided.

Here’s the release from the Capitals website:
The Capitals are pleased to announce that they have acquired 6’3″, 205 lb (94) Brett Seldon from the Coquitlam Express.
He was acquired off waivers late yesterday and will be in the lineup tonight versus the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Thornhill Ontario native is a tough, stay at home defenceman who Head Coach Jim Ingram says will “Play a very gritty style of hockey”.
