Victoria Forward Matt Kennedy Commits to ASU, BCHL Affiliate Players Win Mac’s Tournament, SJHL Announces 2015 Draft, Flurry of BCHL Trades Kick Off 2015:

The BCHL has suspended 19-year-old Surrey Eagles forward Sam Chatterley for two games as a result of being assessed a blow to the head penalty. Chatterley sat out Friday’s 7-3 loss to Alberni Valley and will also miss Saturday’s game in Cowichan. The White Rock native is eligible to return to the Eagles’ lineup on Sunday in Powell River.
A fifth BCHL player has committed to Arizona State University, this time for the 2015-16 season. Victoria Grizzlies forward Matthew Kennedy will attend the Tempe, Arizona campus starting this September. The 19-year-old from Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland has 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) in 36 games this season. The ASU sports blog “House of Sparky” has the details on Kennedy’s commitment here.
The BC Major Midget League’s Cariboo Cougars were crowned the champions of the Mac’s AAA Midget Tournament with a 2-1 double overtime win against the Regina Pat Canadians on Thursday night.
Six players on the Cougars roster are affiliated with BCHL players this season. Goaltender Griffen Outhouse (98), defenseman Kolten Carpenter (97), and forwards Austin Gray (97) and Colton Thomas (98) are affiliated with the Prince George Spruce Kings. Forward Steven Jandric (97) is affiliated with Salmon Arm and F Mitchell Williams (98) with Vernon. The Cougars have posted a summary of the win on their website right here.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League made a pretty big announcement on New Year’s Day, outlining the details of its 2015 draft. The draft is for players who completed their final season of eligibility in bantam hockey.

The SJHL has touted one of the main reasons for the draft is “to ensure that its member teams have equal opportunity to recruit players into their franchises.”. Details of the draft are posted on the SJHL website.

The Salmon Arm SilverBacks added 19-year-old forward Jack Berezan back to their roster after releasing him earlier this season. The Calgary native has three points (one goal, two assists) in ten games with Salmon Arm in 2014-15. He suffered an upper body injury in late October.

The Backs also traded 18-year-old defenseman Cole McCaskill to Prince George for future considerations. McCaskill, who is from Kamloops, had four assists in 18 games with Salmon Arm this season. SilverBacks GM Troy Mick announced the deal on Twitter.

Prince George was also involved in a major deal with the West Kelowna Warriors. The trade sees the Spruce Kings re-acquire 21-year-old forward Michael Buonincontri, along with 18-year-old defenseman Greydon Robinson for 20-year-old defenseman Tyler Kunz.

Buonincontri started the season with PG, posting three points (one goals, two assists) in two games before being traded to West Kelowna. With the Warriors, the Montreal native notched 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) in 30 games.

Robinson, from Calgary, is in his first BCHL season. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) with West Kelowna. 20-year-old Kunz was picked up by the Spruce Kings just a month ago from the AJHL’s Lloydminster Bobcats and tallied five points (one goal, four assists) in seven games with Prince George. PG posted regarding the trade on its Facebook page.

West Kelowna added another defenseman in a trade on Friday, this time from the Grande Prairie Storm of the AJHL for future considerations. 20-year-old blueliner Braeden Jones, a veteran of 44 BCHL games with Trail, has also played 59 games with the Storm. The Edmonton native has 26 points (four goals, 22 assists) in 103 career junior A games.

I mentioned it on Twitter, but the Warriors added 254 games in experience to their blueline in acquiring Kunz and Jones, while only subtracting Robinson’s 24 games from their defense. West Kelowna’s announcement on both the Kunz and Jones acquisitions is here.
